I can't see it taking off, at least not round here. 'Growlers' has a very different meaning!

hahaha, yeah! I nearly posted something about keeping your growlers sterile on twitter earlier. Thought better of it. I think the idea has legs though. There are more and more people asking for/about them.

The gap depends on where you're looking. I can buy a 4-pint carryout at most of my local pubs, albeit cask beer into a plastic container. Some local brewers do the same, mainly on Saturdays.

Is it more of an issue over legal dispense, i.e. having to pour into a stamped vessel first then transfer, which puts off pubs & bars?

I'm looking for glass growlers rather than plastic or cardboard. I think as long as you're advertising the measure you're pouring it into for takeaway you're covered.

It's a weights and measures thing - see The Weights and Measures (Intoxicating Liquor) Order 1988, 2(1)(a) and subsequent clauses - you can see the act here, and if you really want to get your kicks, you can see the Measuring Equipment (Intoxicating Liquor) Regulations 1983 here.

I can remember milk carton type carry outs in pubs years back, but if you want to drink beer at home it's cheaper to get it from a shop.
